There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about travelling by train, and the Ceres Rail journey from Botrivier to the Elgin Railway Market offers a delightful way to rediscover the Overberg at a gentler pace – there are other routes to choose from too.
Leaving Greyton with plenty of time to spare, the adventure begins at Botrivier station, where you climb aboard beautifully restored carriages, complete with original fittings and plenty of old-world charm. Arrive with enough time to pick up a coffee and a snack on the station platform – although you certainly won’t go hungry on board. An impressively efficient barista keeps the coffees coming, while the pancake ladies add another rather delicious reason to settle in and enjoy the ride.
Departing promptly at 8am, the train gently chugs its way towards Elgin. The journey takes around 90 minutes, passing apple orchards and winding through Oak Valley and over the Houw Hoek pass. It’s a route that makes you think about all the people who have travelled through these mountains over the years. A little alien vegetation clearing along parts of the line would certainly open up some spectacular views, but there is still plenty to enjoy.
Then it’s time for the Elgin Railway Market – and around two hours to explore. Purchase another coffee, perhaps an L-gin and tonic, and make your way through the tempting selection of food stalls. The bakery is worth investigating and there are some seriously good waffles.
At 11.30am sharp, it’s all aboard for the return journey. A good tip: sit on the opposite side of the carriage on the way home. The train doesn’t turn around, so swapping sides gives you a chance to appreciate the scenery you missed on the outward trip.
The timing is just right – neither too long nor too short – and the friendly, enthusiastic team makes the whole outing most enjoyable.
Booking ahead is definitely recommended – tickets sell quickly so keep an eye on the Ceres Rail website (link below). Our train was full, although the spacious carriages never felt overcrowded.
