Mindful Farming in the Overberg

Just 20 kilometres outside Greyton, Spinlea Farm is a 475-hectare working farm where agriculture, sustainability, creativity and country living come together.

One of the few working Angora goat farms in the Western Cape, Spinlea has developed a wonderfully diverse offering around a simple philosophy: everything on a farm is connected. Rather than seeing each element in isolation, the team works towards a natural cycle in which one part of the farm supports another.

Manure from the Angora goats feeds the helichrysum, fruit trees, flowers and crops; farm debris and cuttings are reused for mulch and animal feed; bees forage amongst the flowers, fruit trees and indigenous vegetation while providing essential pollination; and the goats themselves happily help tackle weeds and unwanted alien vegetation.

The result is a farm that produces an eclectic and beautiful collection of products. Spinlea’s mohair range celebrates one of nature’s most luxurious renewable fibres, with socks, scarves, throws and other pieces. The farm also produces extra virgin olive oil, raw local honey, seasonal organically grown flowers, flower seeds and bulbs, alongside a selection of thoughtful farm products and gift boxes.

Visitors can experience Spinlea for themselves too. The farm offers farmstay accommodation at The Goat Shed Cottage & Studio, as well as a spacious, eco-conscious campsite. Guests can walk, cycle, trail run, swim in the farm dam and simply enjoy the space, animals and changing Overberg landscape. During kidding season, there may even be an opportunity to meet – and sometimes help bottle-feed – the farm’s baby Angora goats.

Spinlea also offers flower experiences, creative workshops and custom events, making it much more than simply a working farm.

At its heart, Spinlea is about mindful farming – nurturing the land, using resources thoughtfully and recognising that farming is an ever-changing cycle of learning, growing and giving back.
