Did you know that if someone’s heart stops, the actions of a bystander can double or even triple their chance of survival? You don’t have to be a doctor or nurse to make a difference. Knowing just a few simple steps — called Basic Life Support (BLS) — could help you save a life.
Here’s what to do if you find someone who has collapsed:
- Check if the person is responsive. Tap them on the shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you okay?” If there’s no response, call emergency services immediately. Time is critical.
- Check if they’re breathing. If they’re not breathing or only gasping, it’s time to start CPR.
- Start chest compressions. Kneel beside them and place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest, with your other hand on top. Push hard and fast — at least 5cm deep, 100–120 times per minute. (Think of the rhythm to Stayin’ Alive.) Let the chest rise fully between compressions. Continue until help arrives.
You don’t need medical training — just a willingness to act. Consider a first aid course.
