Did you know that if someone’s heart stops, the actions of a bystander can double or even triple their chance of survival? You don’t have to be a doctor or nurse to make a difference. Knowing just a few simple steps — called Basic Life Support (BLS) — could help you save a life.

Here’s what to do if you find someone who has collapsed:

  1. Check if the person is responsive. Tap them on the shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you okay?” If there’s no response, call emergency services immediately. Time is critical.
  2. Check if they’re breathing. If they’re not breathing or only gasping, it’s time to start CPR.
  3. Start chest compressions. Kneel beside them and place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest, with your other hand on top. Push hard and fast — at least 5cm deep, 100–120 times per minute. (Think of the rhythm to Stayin’ Alive.) Let the chest rise fully between compressions. Continue until help arrives.

You don’t need medical training — just a willingness to act. Consider a first aid course.
