Leaving Cape Town excitedly on a Friday afternoon, it seems that getting to Greyton is a quick drive over the mountain. A mere 154km. As you take a sharp left off the N2 at the unmissable shipping container with the words “GREYTON” in big capital letters, you might be mistaken to think you’ve arrived. Not quite yet. Slow down. Slow down even more.

By the time you drive into Greyton Main Road at a mere 30km per hour, take your foot off the pedal and you’ll come to a natural standstill outside the Old Potters Inn. Find a table on the stoep and order yourself a little brewsky from the Copper Cat Distillery. Breathe deeply and experience pure existential peace as you watch horses and dogs, townfolk pass you by — slowly.

For dinner, you’re spoilt for choice. There’s Eva’s prawns at Abbey Rose, or the best vegetarian gnocchi with exotic mushrooms. Or maybe Rupert’s Bistro with spinach and ricotta gnocchi. And do take yourself off for a post-dinner stroll.

Saturday morning means the famous Greyton Market — delicious food, local arts and crafts. Then off to the shops! The one thing that sets us apart is CULTURE. Take a wander to Yves to blend your own perfume. Next door is Mulberry Boutique. Pop into “Once More, WITH FEELING!” for preloved South African designer wear.

Sunday morning — take a stroll in the Nature Reserve at the end of Park Street to our waterfall in the gorge. End your life-restoring weekend with a delicious brunch before reluctantly heading home.
