On 20 September 2025, the tranquil Overberg town of Greyton was transformed into a playground for gravel-bike enthusiasts as The Canola Roller 2025 took centre stage. Organised by Chris van Dalen, Kyall Goodman, Antony Ribot and volunteers on behalf of the Greyton MTB & Gravel Club, The Canola Roller offered participants three route options: 130 km, 80 km, and 30 km.
The flagship 130 km route offered around 1,700 m of climbing. For those seeking a demanding but shorter challenge, the 80 km distance presented rugged private farm tracks and sweeping Overberg views. Meanwhile, the 30 km route catered to younger riders and newcomers — open to those aged 13 and older.
A Ride with Purpose
Beyond the race itself, The Canola Roller 2025 had a strong community and philanthropy dimension. A portion of every entry fee was channelled to the Greyton MTB Juniors Club, which supports over 40 young cyclists from the area through training, mentorship, and infrastructure. The event also encouraged gear donations, asking participants to bring spare bicycles, wheels, or parts for the club’s use.
Riders traversed breathtaking springtime landscapes, jaw-dropping hillsides and views of the Riviersonderend Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop. The wind was a force to be reckoned with — but well-deserved lucky draws, prizes, and a warm post-race atmosphere made it worthwhile.
