After days of heavy storms, Greyton woke on race morning wrapped in mist. It did not last long though as 180 runners set off into the mountains. They quickly climbed above the cloud into one of those perfect Overberg days that reminds you why this town is like no other.
With 1580m of total elevation packed into the 21km and 42km routes, this year’s Mountain Marathon asked plenty of its runners. The mountains answered back with their best. Both races produced some of the closest sprint finishes in the event’s history!
Among those flying the Greyton flag were local runners Edwin, Richard, Matthew, Stacey, and Mariet, with Elrich delivering the standout result of the day, crossing the line in 3rd place in the 42km. Runners from further afield were equally enthusiastic. One competitor captured the feeling perfectly: from the pre-race communication to the welcome at the school, the marshals on course and the aid stations, it was, in their words, the loveliest race experience they had ever had. They’ve done ultra marathons, but nothing comes close to our race!
None of that happens without people. Greyton House parents gave generously of their time as volunteers, and community member Liz Brash went above and beyond, stepping in to organise the marshal network. Our community at its finest!
This event exists for a simple reason: to raise bursary funds for local children. Thanks to the support of Greyton Mountain Bike Club, Greyton Conservation Society, Devon Paisley who captured the day beautifully, Greyton Fish and Chips, and Mount Grace, we move a few more steps closer in that goal. To everyone who contributed, a massive thank you from Greyton House.
Our next event is the Brew Run on 15 August. Locals and businesses are warmly invited to get involved. See you there!
