A bold new initiative is taking root in the Valley of Grace, aimed at cultivating not just food, but also knowledge, skills, and opportunities for the people of Genadendal and surrounding communities. Guided by the internationally recognised Commonland Four Returns framework, this project envisions a thriving, self-sustaining food forest.
At its heart are five core pillars:
- Learning Centre: a hub for eco-sustainability, agro-ecology, indigenous knowledge, entrepreneurship, and life skills
- Storytelling: documenting and sharing the journey to inspire others
- Community Building: creating a gathering place for learning, cultural exchange, and rehabilitation
- Job Creation: through green jobs, internships, and small business opportunities
- Food Security: establishing a gold-standard agro-ecological site for local food production
Planned features include drought-tolerant crops, soil restoration techniques, water harvesting systems, and biodiversity suited to the local Mediterranean climate. The vision is to create economic pathways through green products, eco-tourism, and sustainable agriculture.
